There are many pathways to becoming a CTE teacher, including having:

  • an Associates degree and 2 or more years of work experience
  • a high school degree and 4 or more years of work experience
  • an Associates degree or higher and 2 or more years teaching at the post secondary level
  • 2 or more years of work experience and an industry credential or pass an industry exam

Steps to becoming a CTE teacher

  1. Choose a CTE industry based on your education and work experience.
  2. Select your industry area (under Subject Area) to find your pathway to Trans-A Certification.
  3. See the specific experience required within your industry area.
  4. Update your resume to highlight relevant experience and credentials.
  5. Apply to be eligible for open positions in NYC Public Schools.
  6. Create an account on TEACH, the NYSED teacher application, to start the Trans-A certification process.
  7. Gather documents: Educational transcripts, Evidence of industry credentials, and the Work verification form.
  8. Complete all required workshops.
  9. After your application has been accepted by NYC Public Schools you may begin your job search in the New Teacher Finder.
