Understand your interests and skills

There are many jobs that might fit your interests and skills. Discover career paths and the type of work you might enjoy on My Next Move.

Build your skills and experience

If you need to learn new skills for a job, consider enrolling in a free job training program. Job training is available in many fields. They might last for several weeks and months, with the goal of making sure you’re qualified to work in a new field.

If you already have the skills for the job you want, update your resume to reflect this.

Update your resume

You’ll need a resume to show employers your experience. A good resume will showcase your work experience and education. You can also include any relevant volunteering experience.

Apply to jobs

Once you feel confident in your resume and job interests, search for jobs by exploring our list of job boards

Prepare for the interview

You’re scheduled for an interview! Research the company beforehand so you know about their goals and culture and are prepared to talk about how your background makes you a great fit. Be prepared with examples of your work, as well as questions about the work culture and what it’s like to work there.

Send a thank-you email

After your interview, email your interviewer to thank them for their time, reaffirm your interest, and summarize your key qualifications. This simple act shows your appreciation for their time and can help you make a positive impression on your interviewer.

Negotiate your salary offer

You’ve been offered a job – congrats! Employers expect that you will negotiate your salary, so be prepared by researching the average salary for your job in your geographical area or city. Also consider your years of experience, skills, education level, and any licenses and certifications you have. 

Schedule a time to speak with the hiring manager to discuss the offer – you might want to rehearse first with someone you trust who can provide helpful feedback.
