CTE teachers:
- Prepare students for life after school
- Introduce students to career opportunities and requirements
- Provide hands-on learning experiences
- Develop skills for employment
Your skills are in demand if you have a background in these high-need subject areas:
- Technology
- Business
- Healthcare
There are many pathways to becoming a CTE teacher, including having:
- an Associates degree and 2 or more years of work experience
- a high school degree and 4 or more years of work experience
- an Associates degree or higher and 2 or more years teaching at the post secondary level
- 2 or more years of work experience and an industry credential or pass an industry exam
All pathways require you to:
- Complete workshops
- Get fingerprint clearance
- Commit to 3 years of employment
- Get mentorship during your first year of teaching
- Get daily supervision for your first 20 days teaching

Steps to becoming a CTE teacher
- Choose a CTE industry based on your education and work experience.
- Select your industry area (under Subject Area) to find your pathway to Trans-A Certification.
- See the specific experience required within your industry area.
- Update your resume to highlight relevant experience and credentials.
- Apply to be eligible for open positions in NYC Public Schools.
- Create an account on TEACH, the NYSED teacher application, to start the Trans-A certification process.
- Gather documents: Educational transcripts, Evidence of industry credentials, and the Work verification form.
- Complete all required workshops.
- After your application has been accepted by NYC Public Schools you may begin your job search in the New Teacher Finder.
